7 Things I Learned From Making A TV Magic Special

In 2015, I quit my day job as a pharmacist to realise my childhood dream of becoming a television magician, an ambition that has taken the three years since to realise. Here are seven things I’ve learned during the process. Continue reading “7 Things I Learned From Making A TV Magic Special” »

Well This Is Booking Awkward

Adam Patel Awkward

“Let’s just go,” Maaya said to me, stress audible in her voice.

“We can’t. He’s outside. He’ll see us. Just wait a second..”

The tension was tangible. It was do or die time. My heart was beating in my chest. We had to get out. And we had to do it now. Once we were outside the walls and on the other side of that electric gate, then I could be calm. But until then, I would be on edge.

It was the second day of our stay in Cannes and rather than making a film & meeting plan, as was standard at the Cannes Film Festival, we had spent our first night hatching an escape plan. And this was the moment when that plan had to come together.

Rewind twelve hours… Continue reading “Well This Is Booking Awkward” »

The Undirected Show Episode #1

April 29, 2018

This doesn’t need much introduction. The first recorded episode of the new and highly experimental Undirected Show.

In this episode, Maaya and I talk about film-making, the process of making our film Tea & Coffee, the psychology of self-sabotage, and a random ramble about dieting.

What Now?: Life After Real Magic & Future Experiments

experiments

Since 2015, when I initially made the leap into the unknown and ditched pharmacy to pursue magic, life has been interesting. Lots has happened. I’ve learned a load about magic, about life and about myself. The process of making a television show and getting in finished and distributed has been a long, and at times, difficult journey. But at last, we’re nearly there. I should have a release date for the show very soon indeed. And not a moment too soon!

The completion of a major multi-year project has left me with a bit more down time than I’ve had in quite a while. So rather than spending every waking moment chugging along with the goal, which is pretty much what the last three years has looked like, I’ve retreated inside my man cave and started to think about a very deep and potentially dangerous question: what now? Continue reading “What Now?: Life After Real Magic & Future Experiments” »

Why I’m Switching Off Social Media

April 19, 2018
Switch Off Facebook

For those of you who’ve clicked through to this post from Facebook or Twitter, yes, I do get the irony. But let me explain.

I think social media was a nice idea. The idea of being able to share things casually with people, without going to the trouble or writing an e-mail, was nice. For a while. It was novel. And I think it did achieve Facebook’s original mission statement of making the world more connected.

It was the service we never knew we needed. Suddenly, we could share with our friends our every thought and photos of everything we ate. Important stuff. Continue reading “Why I’m Switching Off Social Media” »

Sorry Leeds

April 9, 2018
Sorry Leeds

I’m quite surprised in all honesty. Yesterday night I should have been on stage in Leeds but because of one or two things that happened in the preceding couple of weeks – the kind of things that you can’t see coming and just hit you out of the blue – the decision was made to postpone the show. And apparently, judging from the number of e-mails I’ve received to this effect in the last few days, I have disappointed quite a few people by making that decision. So I wanted to apologise. And explain. Continue reading “Sorry Leeds” »

The Snow Day Update: Diet Hacking, Getting Ripped, New Companies & Future Plans

March 2, 2018
London Snow

So it’s the 2nd of March, not that we’d know. Spring is but a few weeks away and yet the UK currently faces a Siberian-style blizzard the likes of which I’ve only ever seen in movies. The UK media often over-hypes the effects of snow, predicting an all-white armageddon because it’s going to snow, so I paid little attention. But the so-called ‘Beast From The East’ is no joke!

On Wednesday night I made the executive decision to drive from Leeds to London in the thick of the blizzard, based on the hypothesis that if I left it until morning, the ice would have set in and the roads would be undrivable. My mum later told me I was probably right.

Tonight, I thought it was over, and was all ready to hop on the tube and head to the Hen & Chickens Theatre to watch one of my favourite magicians, Pete Firman, doing his latest show. Until 4pm. When it suddenly started to snow again. Within minutes, a dense and eerie fog had set in. The kind of thing you see in a Stephen King adaptation.

So, very unlike me, I find myself at home tonight, snowed in and with time to contemplate life. So I thought I’d give you all a little update on what’s happening lately. Continue reading “The Snow Day Update: Diet Hacking, Getting Ripped, New Companies & Future Plans” »

Here’s To The Ones Who Dream: 7 Philosophies To Pick You Up After A Rough Week

February 23, 2018
Here's To The Ones Who Dream

If I’m honest, I’m writing this because I’ve not had a particularly good week. And I’m writing this post more to remind myself of my core philosophies than to preach to anybody. But if anybody else gets anything out of this, then I’m very glad to help. We all have a rough and negative patch from time to time. And during those times, it’s important not to lose focus. To keep our eyes on the prize, so to speak. To keep the faith. Continue reading “Here’s To The Ones Who Dream: 7 Philosophies To Pick You Up After A Rough Week” »
