Since 2015, when I initially made the leap into the unknown and ditched pharmacy to pursue magic, life has been interesting. Lots has happened. I’ve learned a load about magic, about life and about myself. The process of making a television show and getting in finished and distributed has been a long, and at times, difficult journey. But at last, we’re nearly there. I should have a release date for the show very soon indeed. And not a moment too soon!
The completion of a major multi-year project has left me with a bit more down time than I’ve had in quite a while. So rather than spending every waking moment chugging along with the goal, which is pretty much what the last three years has looked like, I’ve retreated inside my man cave and started to think about a very deep and potentially dangerous question: what now?
Where does life go from here? I find that a very passive question. It casts me like a branch floating down a river, at the mercy of the current. And I suppose in life, to a degree that is the case. But it’s not entirely true. So a better question would be, “What do I want to do next?”
I have a number of ideas. The whole Real Magic chapter has been about more than just a career change. And it’s been about more than just creating a television show. I think the way things turned out, it’s been as much of a period of therapy and closure for me as it has been about anything else. Regardless of what I’ve achieved during this period, I have learned a lot and inevitably grown a lot.
So the seemingly natural thing to do with all of that has been to write a book, telling the story of the last three years. If you’ve seen me live you will know bits of the story. But the book is the first telling of the full story in my own words. From quitting my day job and how that came about, all the way to how I made the TV show. It should be available to pre-order very soon indeed!
The type of magic I do brings together lots of different things. I’ve developed a form of magic that combines the traditional with the cutting-edge; a fusion of art and science. And then there are skills of communication and story-telling that naturally come with almost any form of entertainment.
And while entertainment is nice, those techniques, skills and disciplines have uses beyond the realm of light or mystery entertainment. And I think that if I can share these skills with other people and have them improve their lives as well as mine, that can only be a good thing, both for me, for them, and for the world as a whole. So one of the things I’ve started working on now that might seem a little off-topic for an entertainer, is a number of training courses. I’m not going to teach magic, but I will be teaching some of the related skills with a view to helping people in the various parts of their lives where the skills have helped me.
Maaya and I are doing a bi-weekly (fortnightly) podcast about whatever is on our minds. It’s called Undirected and you can listen at http://www.undirected.co.uk.
I’m also looking to get back into acting. Magic has been enormous fun. But I feel that it’s time to return to acting. So I’m currently exploring a number of different options on both stage and screen. And I guess we’ll see what comes together.
